NORTHFIELD — Officials at Norwich University are set to celebrate a museum on its Northfield campus that has been designated the first and only Smithsonian affiliate in the state of Vermont.

The school is planning an event today to celebrate the designation that will include guided tours of the Sullivan Museum and History Center. Sen. Patrick Leahy is among the dignitaries who will be on hand at the event, which begins at 1:30 p.m.

The center is a 16,000-square-foot facility that features permanent and changing exhibitions, learning stations, a conservation lab, space for exhibit preparation and object storage, a fully equipped electronic classroom and conference space, as well a reference room for researchers.

The museum became associated with the Smithsonian earlier this year. It’s located at 158 Harmon Drive in Northfield.
