RutlandHerald.com - We Are Vermont

News You Can Use

The biggest news of this bunch is that Marselis Parsons – a news institution in this state – is retiring this year after a 40-year career as a reporter and newscaster across the state. Many Vermonters grew up seeing his face on the television every night at 6 p.m., telling the state about the events of the day. He will be missed.

In Rutland, veteran Brent Curtis won Best Print Reporter – he’s been at the Rutland Herald for almost 10 years, and covered just about every beat from courts to schools to features on the Invite page. Rutland loves country music, and Cat Country 105.1 FM won for the Best Radio Station, where locals turn for their country fix and the commentary of sometime Herald counterpunch Tim Philbin.

Theplaidcrew.com, a venue for local commentator Jim Sabataso, was the favorite blog of our readers, both political and non-political. Jim writes an occasional column, Local Bound, for the Herald (he was also runner-up for print commentator), and his wry humor and insight into Rutland is much appreciated. The blog itself is a mix of sarcastic commentary on the national state of affairs.

Our Best Print Commentator is Jack Healy, who actually is better-known as a radio commentator as the voice of various sports teams from UVM hockey and basketball. He’s got a blog at www.nsnradio.net where he comments on sports; Rutlanders are about to hear more from Jack when he becomes the voice of Castleton State’s fledgling football team.

And yes, the Rutland Herald tweets, or Twitters, not to be confused with Mr. Twitter’s on North Main Street. We tied with WCAX for best Twitterer (should that be Tweeter?), and let’s just say we aim on being the sole No. 1 next year!
