30 Plays in 60 minutes?! You Bet!

New England Youth Theatre proudly presents “Too Much Light Makes The Baby Go Blind,” or TMLMTBGB (as it is affectionately known). Written by the Neo-Futurists, and directed by NEYT fan favorite Jane Baker, TMLMTBGB became the longest running show in Chicago and the only open-run Off-Off-Broadway show in New York. Starting in 1988, the show ran 50 weekends of the year until 2016. This show performs at 7pm on October 4, 5, 11, and 12, and at 2pm on October 5 and 12 at 100 Flat Street, in Brattleboro.

What in the world is the “Neo-Futurist” experience, you ask?  The Neo-Futurist aesthetic demands that everything that transpires in their theater be non-illusory, which is to say that they pretend nothing; actors only play themselves. “The show is extremely spontaneous. The kids are learning how to be prepared for almost anything, and it has been a really fun process to watch that progress,” says Baker. “As an improv show, there is no fourth wall. You have to work with the audience, which most of these kids haven't experienced before. So the show depends equally on audience and actors".

This large and vibrant cast of teens, ages 13-19, is an ensemble experiment, calling on the audience to participate in this interactive performance. “30 Plays in 60 Minutes,” is the theme of the evening, and each play is wildly different, touching on all tones and genres; they may be political, satirical, personal, tragic, comic, poetic, abstract, surreal or musical.

The play performs October 4 at 7pm, October 5 at 2pm and 7pm, October 11 at 7pm, and October 12 at 2pm and 7pm. Tickets for these performances are $15 for adults, $13 for seniors, and $11 for children. Tickets may be purchased in advance at www.neyt.org, in person at the NEYT Box Office from noon to 5 on Wednesdays, or by phone at 802-246-6398 . The show plays at the New England Youth Theatre on 100 Flat Street in Brattleboro VT. New England Youth Theatre is an accessible theater, with accommodations for wheelchairs, and Assistive Listening Devices for patrons who are hard of hearing. This show was made possible through generous support from Experienced Goods. New England Youth Theatre is also supported by the Vermont Children's Trust Fund, Vermont Arts Council, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
