GUILFORD - Police said a person died in a fire at an Autumn Hill Road Tuesday morning.

Emergency crews were notified at about 4:15 a.m. of a fire at the home at 271 Autumn Hill Road.

The home is a single-family house with an attached apartment. Both were occupied at the time of the fire, with two people in the house and two people in the apartment, according to a press release from the Vermont State Police.

The two tenants and one of the residents of the house escaped the blaze but the second resident of the house was found dead, police said.

That name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The body is being taken to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington for an autopsy to determine cause and manner of death.

The fire appears to have started inside the house and is not considered suspicious. Police said an investigation into the origin and cause of the fire is underway.

Vermont State Police did not release any further information on Tuesday afternoon.
