Rosh Hashanah

Norm Lash, right, sounds the shofar horn, as Rabba Kaya Stern-Kaufman calls out the notes while the pair prepare for the upcoming Rosh Hashanah, or "Beginning of the Year," holiday, at the Rutland Jewish Center Friday afternoon. Lash, has operated as the "ba'al tokei'a" or "shofar sounder," on and off in the Rutland congregation for over 50 years. "What appeals to me is that my ancestors did this thousands of years ago and I'm doing it now," he said. The center will celebrate Monday from 9am-12:30pm Monday August 27 and the following morning 10am-12pm. (Robert Layman / Staff Photo)
