Alfred J. Wade Sr. WHITEHALL, N.Y. - Alfred J. Wade Sr., 81, of Whitehall, NY, passed away on Oct. 30, 2018, at The Slate Valley Nursing Home, formerly the Orchard, in Granville, NY, after a brief illness. He was born Sept. 8, 1937, in Whitehall, son of the late Charles Wade Sr. and Irene Lyman. Alfred was a veteran of the National Guard, serving from 1954-1963. Alfred was a hardworking, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved and cherished each and every one of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved spending quality time with them all whether it was a quiet visit or a fun-filled family celebration. One of Alfred's all-time favorite hobbies was going to the casino, which he called his "job." He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved to tinker in his shops. Alfred was a farmer for many years while also working at Telescope until his retirement in 1986. He was known and loved by many and will be missed by all. Alfred was predeceased by his loving wife, Darlene; his brother, Charles; and his son-in-law, Craig Bashaw. Survivors include his children Brenda Bashaw, of Port Charlotte, FL; Grace Sheldrick and husband David Jr., Alfred Wade Jr., Penny Hollister and husband David, all of Whitehall; Robert Wade and wife Tonya, of Castleton. He also leaves behind two very special family members Timothy Beebe, of Maryland, whom Alfred still thought of as one of his sons-in-law; and his Aunt Josie Lyman, of Granville, whom he loved with all his heart. Siblings are Francis Wade, of Whitehall; Richard "Dick" Wade, of Kansas; and Diane Armstrong, of Whitehall. Alfred is survived by 16 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held at the Durfee Funeral Home, 119 North Main St. in Fair Haven, VT, on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2018, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Sunday, Nov. 4, 2018, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with burial following in the Sciota Cemetery on Wade Road in Whitehall. Pallbearers will be his grandsons George Beebe, David Sheldrick III, John Hollister, Stephen Beebe, Matt Wade and Kevin Wade. Memorial donations may be made to the Sciota Cemetery Association for the maintenance of the grounds, and sent to Sciota Cemetery Association, in care of George Armstrong, 1 Park Ave., Whitehall, NY 12887.
