Gloria Jean (Hakey) Montague HYDE PARK — Gloria Jean (Hakey) Montague died on May 3, 2019. Gloria was born Oct. 23, 1944, in Bellows Falls, to Doris (Morrison) Hakey and Moses Abraham Hakey. She graduated from Bellows Falls High School in 1962, spent two years at the University of Vermont and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Castleton State College in 1969. Gloria later received a Master’s degree in Fine Arts from Lesley College in Boston, MA. Gloria married Alan Wood Montague in Saxton’s River on April 17, 1965. They recently celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary. Gloria spent many years as a primary school teacher in Vermont. She taught for years in the Brandon and Cornwall areas. She was the teaching principal at The Sudbury School during its first three years of existence. Gloria was actively involved in community organizations where she and Alan lived. She was an avid reader, had a serious green thumb, liked to swim, she loved cats, and she enjoyed making a number of different houses into warm, comfortable homes. During the last eight years, she and Alan spent about five months each year in Florida staying warm. Gloria is survived by her husband, Alan; their son, Aaron and wife Renee; and her sisters Mitzi Hakey, Carol Hakey and Sandra Davis. A celebration of Gloria’s beautiful life will be held this summer in Hyde Park. Gloria was my third-grade teacher and Alan was also one of my teachers in high school. She was such a kind and wonderful person. My thoughts go out to Alan and the family.
