Robert J. "Twig" Canfield FAIR HAVEN — Robert J. “Twig” Canfield, 76, of Fair Haven died Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 4, 2020, at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington. He was born on Nov. 30, 1943, in Springfield, the son of Lawrence Joseph and Barbara Ann (Jones) Canfield. Twig graduated from the Fair Haven High School in 1961 and the Castleton College in 1975 with a AB in Public Administration and a BS in Business in 1976. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War being honorably discharged in 1972. Twig had been employed as a house painter while in college, then by Jack Helm for a year, Smith's Hardware in Bomoseen during the '80s and since 1992, a clerk at Williams Hardware Store in Poultney for 23 years. He was an avid writer and a regular contributor to the Fair Haven Promoter from 1982 until 1999 and then for the Lakes Region Free Press. Twig loved music and played piano, guitar, harmonica and drums. His hobby was writing musicals. He did concerts in Fair Haven and Poultney. He was especially proud of one he and his nephew, Mike, had done in Poultney on short notice, never ever played together, five practices and they “aced it!” He mentored several high school students. In 1974 while looking for a way to keep students busy on weekends, he started “Pee Wee” basketball program to teach third and fourth grade boys how to dribble, shoot and pass. In 1978, he took on a similar “'Lil Gals” program for third and fourth grade girls. Survivors include three stepdaughters, Lauren Zidovsky of Denver, Colorado, Amy Zidovsky of East Hartford, Connecticut, and Jessica Zidovsky Storey of Waitsfield, Vermont; a brother, William Canfield of Fair Haven; three sisters, Kitty Canfield of Rutland, Patty Stannard and Ann Marie Larkin, both of Fair Haven; five step-grandchildren, Mara Zidovsky, Matteo Zidovsky-Rotta, Tomaso Zidovsky-Rotta, Giulia Zidovsky-Rotta and Ryeder Storey; and nieces and nephews who include Monica Canfield, Phil Stannard, Mike Stannard, Jennifer Canfield, Carrie Camara, John P. Larkin II, Stephanie Larkin, Jessie Larkin, William P. Canfield II, Lawrence Canfield, Sara Canfield and Melanie Farwell. He was predeceased by his parents; also by a brother, James “Hot Rod” Canfield, in 2000. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2020, at the Durfee Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16, 2020, at the First Congregational Church of Fair Haven. Burial with military honors will be at a later date in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.
