Why is capitalism failing to provide for all Americans? Modern capitalism can be traced back to Adam Smith's "Wealth of Nations."

Modern American capitalism holds as one of the fundamental principles, the concept of self interest. However, Adam Smith wrote his "Theory of Moral Sentiments" prior to "Wealth of Nations." In it, Adam Smith discusses "enlightened self interest."

There is a significant difference between Adam Smith's "enlightened self interest" and simply "self interest." Why do the supply-side economic charlatans never discuss "enlightened self interest?" The simplest answer: Those with the wealth of this nation want an acceptable justification for their greed, acting contrary to the very ideology they expound.
