It was 1-0, Rutland over Brattleboro in a boys Marble Valley League soccer match Tuesday night and it could have been substantially more lopsided on the scoreboard.

The Raiders were already leading in the second half when Andres Aguilar, who was a nightmare along the right side most of the night, sent Jacob Henderson up the middle in the penalty area. Henderson pounded a shot with a defender on his hip and Colonels goalie Emmett Dews absorbed the blast from close range with his body.

Moments later, Jamison Evans sent a high shot goalward and with Dews out of position, Keegan Allembert headed it away.

The Raiders had the lion’s share of the best chances at Alumni Field but the one by Aguilar late in the first half was enough to avenge last week’s 4-1 loss in Brattleboro.

Rutland is now 8-3-1 and in good position for a home game in the first round of the Division I tournament in two weeks. Rutland was the seventh-ranked team in the division coming into the game while Brattleboro, which had two goals each from Jackson Buettener and Nate Lewis against the Raiders last week, was eighth.

Rutland charged out looking for a goal right away and Aguilar was right in the middle of two chances, setting up Evans’ header chance with a crossing pass and then firing just wide off a pass from Gabe Knapp.

Aguilar and Finn McGuinness had touches to set up a Carter Stearns shot that went wide, then the Colonels got a couple chances including a shot on frame by Nick Campbell that Raiders keeper Jaden Kelley gathered up.

Rutland broke through on a corner with Henderson putting the ball in play along the ground. McGuinness was the first Raider to get a foot on it and after the Colonels defense smothered the shot Aguilar booted in the rebound.

Aguilar found himself in position pad the lead early in the second half but was off the mark, but so were Brattleboro’s Buettner, Jack Price and Jesse Jerome-Wrenn with fleeting opportunities.

Rutland will visit Mount Anthony on Thursday, and the Raiders will complete the regular season next Thursday when Burr and Burton comes to town.
